Technology makes it very easy to violate copyright laws in the classroom. Technology is new, innovative, convenient and in most cases very reliable. Technology also makes it very easy to copy, duplicate, find, and distribute others intellectual property. Some issues are not readily identified as copyright infringement like sharing software and copying photographs. I can attest to not being aware of the many ways of violating copyright laws. As educators we must not leave our students subject to committing crimes. While we are introducing these emerging forms of technology, we must teach our students the correct way to use them. Just like plagiarism, not valuing or understanding copyright laws shows a lack of respect for another person's work and creativity.
There is a great video on YouTube titled Copyright in the Classroom, that explores Copyright issues in Education. I really enjoyed this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hoGrVmDj1Yo
Hi Chelsea,
ReplyDeleteFirst, thank you for sharing the youtube info. I plan on watching it later. I agree with you it being easy to violate copyright laws. I see it everyday. Teachers making copies from a workbook for several classes and doing it quite a few times a week. I also agree with the fact that teachers are not setting a good example for their students. I also agree with the fine line we must walk in order to show students the correct way to use materials and to use proper documentation. I can remember when I was a high school student, which was many moons ago. The teachers never let us watch movies in the classroom unless it was something the school had ordered. I can't even remember doing worksheets. It was the good old textbook. I am so glad we have become a modern society and we now have innovative technology, but we must do things a little differently once we become educators ourselves.
Technology is very accessible, which makes it very easy to infringe on someone’s copyrights. This infringement is very attainable without a person even having the knowledge that this federal law was broken. I have learned to pay closer attention to the information that I gained from the internet and how I use in my classroom instruction.
